भगवद गीता अध्याय 2 श्लोक 34
Bhagavad Gita Adhyay 2 Shlok 34 में भगवान श्रीकृष्ण अर्जुन को बताते हैं कि यदि वह युद्ध से भागते हैं, तो उनका अपयश उनकी मृत्यु से भी अधिक होगा। अर्जुन को अपकीर्ति से बचने के लिए युद्ध में मरना अधिक श्रेयस्कर है।
श्लोक:
अकीर्तिं चापि भूतानि कथयिष्यन्ति तेऽव्ययाम्।
सम्भावितस्य चाकीर्तिर्मरणादतिरिच्यते ॥३४॥
Transliteration:
akīrtiṁ chāpi bhūtāni kathayiṣhyanti te ’vyayām
sambhāvitasya chākīrtir maraṇād atirichyate
अर्थ:
लोग सदैव तुम्हारे अपयश का वर्णन करेंगे और सम्मानित व्यक्ति के लिए अपयश तो मृत्यु से भी बढ़कर है।
Meaning:
People will always speak of your disgrace, and for an honorable person, dishonor is worse than death.
तात्पर्य:
अब अर्जुन के मित्र तथा गुरु के रूप में भगवान् कृष्ण अर्जुन को युद्ध से विमुख न होने का अन्तिम निर्णय देते हैं। वे कहते हैं, "अर्जुन! यदि तुम युद्ध प्रारम्भ होने के पूर्व ही युद्धभूमि छोड़ देते हो तो लोग तुम्हें कायर कहेंगे। और यदि तुम सोचते हो कि लोग गाली देते रहें, किन्तु तुम युद्धभूमि से भागकर अपनी जान बचा लोगे तो मेरी सलाह है कि तुम्हें युद्ध में मर जाना ही श्रेयस्कर होगा। तुम जैसे सम्माननीय व्यक्ति के लिए अपकीर्ति मृत्यु से भी बुरी है। अतः तुम्हें प्राणभय से भागना नहीं चाहिए, युद्ध में मर जाना ही श्रेयस्कर होगा। इससे तुम मेरी मित्रता का दुरुपयोग करने तथा समाज में अपनी प्रतिष्ठा खोने के अपयश से बच जाओगे।"
अतः अर्जुन के लिए भगवान् का अन्तिम निर्णय था कि वह संग्राम से पलायन न करे अपितु युद्ध में मरे।
Now, as a friend and mentor, Lord Krishna gives Arjuna the final decision not to flee from the battle. He says, "Arjuna, if you leave the battlefield before the war begins, people will call you a coward. And if you think that you can escape the battle and save your life while people continue to criticize you, my advice is that it is better for you to die in battle. For a person of honor like you, disgrace is worse than death. Therefore, you should not flee out of fear for your life; dying in battle is more honorable. This way, you will avoid the disgrace of misusing my friendship and losing your reputation in society."
Thus, Lord Krishna's final decision for Arjuna was to not abandon the battlefield, but to die in the war.
