भगवद गीता अध्याय 3 श्लोक 38
Bhagavad Gita Adhyay 3 Shlok 38 में जीवात्मा के आवरण की विभिन्न मात्राओं का उदाहरण देते हुए बताया गया है कि कैसे काम जीवात्मा की शुद्ध चेतना को धूमिल कर देता है।
श्लोक:
धूमेनाव्रियते वह्निर्यथादर्शो मलेन च ।
यथोल्बेनावृतो गर्भस्तथा तेनेदमावृतम् ॥३८॥
Transliteration:
dhūmenāvriyate vahnir yathādarśho malena cha
yatholbenāvṛito garbhas tathā tenedam āvṛitam
अर्थ:
जिस प्रकार अग्नि धुएँ से दर्पण धूल से अथवा भ्रूण गर्भाशय से आवृत रहता है, उसी प्रकार जीवात्मा इस काम की विभिन्न मात्राओं से आवृत रहता है।
Meaning:
Just as fire is covered by smoke, a mirror by dust, and a fetus by the womb, similarly the living entity is covered by different degrees of lust.
तात्पर्य:
जीवात्मा के आवरण की तीन कोटियाँ हैं जिनसे उसकी शुद्ध चेतना धूमिल होती है। यह आवरण काम ही है, जो विभिन्न स्वरूपों में होता है, जैसे अग्नि में धुआँ, दर्पण पर धूल तथा भ्रूण पर गर्भाशय।
जब काम की उपमा धूम्र से दी जाती है तो इसका आशय है कि जीवित स्फुलिंग की अग्नि कुछ-कुछ अनुभवगम्य है। यद्यपि जहाँ धुआँ होता है वहाँ अग्नि अवश्य है, किंतु प्रारम्भिक अवस्था में अग्नि प्रत्यक्ष नहीं होती। यह अवस्था कृष्णभावनामृत के शुभारम्भ जैसी है।
दर्पण पर धूल का उदाहरण मन रूपी दर्पण को आध्यात्मिक विधियों से स्वच्छ करने की प्रक्रिया के समान है, जिसमें भगवान के पवित्र नाम का संकीर्तन सर्वोत्तम उपाय है।
गर्भाशय द्वारा आवृत भ्रूण की उपमा असहाय अवस्था के लिए है, क्योंकि गर्भ में शिशु भी स्वतन्त्र नहीं होता। वृक्ष भी जीवात्माएँ हैं, पर उनमें काम की प्रबलता के कारण वे चेतनाशून्य होते हैं।
धूमिल दर्पण पशु-पक्षियों के समान है, और धूम्र से आवृत अग्नि मनुष्य के समान। मनुष्य जीवन में थोड़ा-बहुत कृष्णभावनामृत का उदय होता है, और यदि प्रगति हो तो आध्यात्मिक जीवन की अग्नि प्रज्ज्वलित हो सकती है।
यदि अग्नि के धुएँ को ठीक से नियंत्रित किया जाए तो अग्नि जल सकती है। इसलिए मनुष्य जीवन जीवात्मा के लिए संसार के बंधन से छूटने का अवसर है। मनुष्य जीवन में काम रूपी शत्रु को कृष्णभावनामृत के अनुशीलन से जीता जा सकता है।
There are three coverings of the soul which obscure its pure consciousness. These coverings are lust in various forms, just like smoke covers fire, dust covers a mirror, and the womb covers a fetus.
The comparison of lust to smoke means that the soul’s living spark of spiritual fire is somewhat perceptible but initially not fully manifest. Just as smoke indicates the presence of fire, the spiritual fire in the soul begins to appear subtly.
The dust on the mirror is like the impurities on the mind that can be cleansed by spiritual practices, especially the chanting of the Lord’s holy name.
The womb covering the fetus symbolizes the helpless state of the soul trapped and unable to move freely. Trees represent souls heavily influenced by lust, often unconscious.
The dimmed mirror represents animals, and the smoke-covered fire represents humans, who have some awakening of Krishna consciousness.
If the smoke is controlled properly, the fire can burn brightly. Similarly, human life is an opportunity for the soul to free itself from the bondage of the material world. The enemy called lust can be overcome through the practice of Krishna consciousness.
