भगवद गीता अध्याय 15 श्लोक 1
Bhagavad Gita Adhyay 15 Shlok 1 में भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने इस भौतिक जगत की तुलना अश्वत्थ वृक्ष से की है। इस वृक्ष की जड़ें ऊपर की ओर और शाखाएँ नीचे की ओर फैली हैं तथा इसके पत्ते वैदिक स्तोत्र हैं। जो इस वृक्ष के रहस्य को जान लेता है, वही वेदों का वास्तविक ज्ञाता है।
श्लोक:
ऊर्ध्वमूलमधः शाखमश्वत्थं प्राहुरव्ययम् ।
छन्दांसि यस्य पर्णानि यस्तं वेद स वेदवित् ॥१॥
Transliteration:
ūrdhva-mūlam adhaḥ-śhākham aśhvatthaṁ prāhur avyayam
chhandānsi yasya parṇāni yas taṁ veda sa veda-vit
अर्थ:
भगवान् ने कहा - कहा जाता है कि एक शाश्वत अश्वत्थ वृक्ष है, जिसकी जड़ें ऊपर की ओर हैं और शाखाएँ नीचे की ओर तथा पत्तियाँ वैदिक स्तोत्र हैं। जो इस वृक्ष को जानता है, वही वेदों का ज्ञाता है।
Meaning:
The Supreme Lord said: It is said that there is an eternal banyan tree, with its roots upward and its branches downward. Its leaves are the Vedic hymns. One who knows this tree is the knower of the Vedas.
तात्पर्य:
भक्तियोग की महत्ता की विवेचना के बाद यह प्रश्न उठ सकता है कि वेदों का क्या प्रयोजन है?
इस अध्याय में बताया गया है कि वैदिक अध्ययन का उद्देश्य कृष्ण को समझना है। अतः जो कृष्णभावनाभावित है, जो भक्ति में रत है, वही वेदों का ज्ञाता है।
इस भौतिक जगत के बंधन की तुलना अश्वत्थ वृक्ष से की गई है।
जो व्यक्ति सकाम कर्मों में लगा है, उसके लिए इस वृक्ष का कोई अंत नहीं है। वह एक शाखा से दूसरी शाखा में और वहाँ से तीसरी में घूमता रहता है। इस जगत रूपी वृक्ष का कोई अंत नहीं है और जो इसमें आसक्त है, उसकी मुक्ति की कोई संभावना नहीं है।
वेदिक स्तोत्र, जो आत्मोन्नति के लिए हैं, वे ही इस वृक्ष के पत्ते हैं।
इस वृक्ष की जड़ें ऊपर की ओर बढ़ती हैं, क्योंकि वे इस ब्रह्माण्ड के सर्वोच्च लोक से प्रारम्भ होती हैं, जहाँ पर ब्रह्मा स्थित हैं।
यदि कोई इस मोह रूपी अविनाशी वृक्ष को समझ लेता है, तो वह इससे बाहर निकल सकता है।
After explaining the importance of devotional service, the question arises about the purpose of studying the Vedas. In this chapter, it is clarified that the goal of Vedic study is to understand Krishna. Thus, one who is Krishna conscious and engaged in devotion already knows the essence of the Vedas.
The bondage of this material world is compared to the banyan tree (aśhvattha). For one engaged in fruitive activities, this tree has no end. He keeps moving from one branch to another endlessly. The Vedic hymns, meant for the upliftment of the soul, are the leaves of this tree.
The roots of this tree grow upward, beginning from the highest planet of this universe, where Brahma resides. When one understands this eternal banyan tree, which is a symbol of illusion, he can free himself from material bondage.
